"I'm glad I followed my heart"

In a way, working there was like a second upbringing. I learned how to work hard and be punctual. When I finished high school, I went to university to study business but quit after one year. I had a lot of trouble focusing in class and I didn’t enjoy sitting still all day.
I decided to take a gap year. That gap year turned into two years of working in a bar. I really enjoyed it, but I still felt that I needed to go back to university. I went back to become a teacher. After 2.5 years of education, I realized during a phone call with my mum that I needed to quit. I wasn’t passionate about teaching as I was about working in hospitality.
I resigned from school and started working in a beach club. This time I knew that I wasn’t going back to study. Soon I got promoted and became the manager. I learned more during those years than I ever learned in school. Later, I left the beach club and started working in the hotel business. Last year, I was offered a role with Kimpton De Witt, which included compiling the whole menu together with our Head Chef. Looking back, it wasn’t easy to quit my studies because I had no idea what was ahead of me. However, I’m so glad that I listened to my gut feeling and followed my heart.
